Engaged Scholar of ReligionSarah E. Robinson, Ph.D., also Robinson-Bertoni, is a critical-constructive scholar of religion, ecology, and social justice. Her research employs comparative, feminist, and qualitative methods to study food, sustainability, and climate concerns in religious contexts, such as Muslim, Christian, Indigenous, and Buddhist communities. Disruptions in soil, air, water, and climate connect with social disruptions, amplifying existing injustices and destabilizing communities. Religious communities and ethical leaders inspire activities for environmental conservation, community resilience, earth adaptation, and restoration. Robinson collaborated with Teresia Mbari Hinga, Lilian Dube, and Theresa Yugar to edit the 2021 volume, Valuing Lives: Healing Earth: Religion, Gender, and Life on Earth. Robinson serves as elected Board Member-at-Large for the International Society for the Study of Religion, Nature, and Culture (ISSRNC). She is also on the Steering Committee for the American Academy of Religion's Religion and Food Unit and served in a variety of roles from Conference Manager to Unit Chair from 2006-2020 in the American Academy of Religion, Western Region. Writing poetry, singing (Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir from 1998-2005), home gardening, and reflecting in socially engaged scholarship, Robinson participates in life-giving activities. In her work, she grapples with challenging questions and applies critical reasoning, constructive vision, and practical action. Her work builds on empirical accuracy in tandem with human traditions, which intertwine through daily life, meaning formation, and decision-making.
